Panel Discussion: Occupy the Media: Independent Media Interventions in the Occupy Movement and Beyond
How is the Occupy Movement representing itself? How is corporate media portraying the Occupy Movement? What ways can Independent media support and build with the Occupy Movement?
Panelists will address the topic for 10 minutes each and we will open the discussion to include the audience.
Facilitator: Klee Benally – Indigenous Action Media
Zoe Hammer is a scholar/activist and member of the faculty of Cultural & Regional Studies at Prescott College. Her areas of teaching, research and activism include: prison abolition, border demilitarization, social justice journalism and media strategy development, labor justice, environmental politics, community organizing, and the politics of allyship.
Randall Amster, J.D., Ph.D., is the Graduate Chair of Humanities at Prescott College. He serves as Executive Director of the Peace & Justice Studies Association and as Contributing Editor for New Clear Vision. Among his recent books are Lost in Space: The Criminalization, Globalization, and Urban Ecology of Homelessness (LFB Scholarly, 2008), and the co-edited volume Building Cultures of Peace: Transdisciplinary Voices of Hope and Action (Cambridge Scholars Publishing, 2009).

Simon Ortiz, Acoma Pueblo writer and poet, also a professor at Arizona State University, has published Going for the Rain, A Good Journey, Fight Back: For the Sake of the People, For the Sake of the Land, from Sand Creek, Out There Somewhere, and a number of other books. His approach toward teaching and learning is liberation and de-colonization. “Indigenous land, culture, community is our past, present, and future. Our grandmothers and grandfathers taught and learned that long ago. That’s what we must continue to teach and learn today.” He is the father of three children and the grandfather of eight.
